Composition in Orange and Turquoise is a painting which takes Whistler’s ‘Arrangement in Grey and Black’ as a starting point. A figurative painting exploring abstract concerns. The orange striped skirt is intended to act not purely as representation but also as a series of abstract gestural marks, balanced against the flat area of turquoise and the pink and black of the figure itself. This is emphasised by its setting against an almost purely white background, akin to a canvas that has merely been primed.
